Rocky Mountain Steel Bands, established in 2003 by Rick Henson, is an exciting group of community bands that exists to share the amazing steel drum melodies from the islands of Trinidad & Tobago with those seeking an accessible adventure in music to enrich their lives.  Our classes, workshops, and performance ensembles offer something for all ages and skill levels.

Our members come from all walks of life and music experiences.  Some have never played steel drums and many others have never even played music before.  Others have played for many years in college steel band programs across the country.  No matter where you are we have a class or band for you to join.

As you can see from our cover photo, some of our members are Parrotheads.  Others simply love great music.  You don’t even have to know how to read music.  One of the best ways to get started is to just come and observe a class.  You might end up playing a little cowbell, just for fun, but it’s a great way to see what this is all about.

Here are some of our favorite links:

  • For high quality sheet music for any steel band, check out ramajay.com.
  • Rick runs two professional steel drum ensembles:
    • Urban Island is a high energy band with 5-7 members.  They play wonderful traditional calypso and soca; and plenty of Jimmy Buffet, Jack Johnson, Bob Marley and other well known songs.  It’s sure to get you moving!
    • Strings & Steel is a steel drum and guitar duo that was established back in 2007.  This beautiful blend of instruments makes for lively background music for corporate events, destination beach weddings, or even back yard BBQs.
  • Pan tuning.  Darren Dyke is based in Texas and makes his way to Colorado 1-2 times every year.  He also has a great blog: http://www.pancyclemusic.com
  • Please check out our YouTube channel as well.  It’s rmsteelbands and here is a link:http://www.youtube.com/user/rmsteelbands

We are so blessed to have an amazing festival right here in Colorado, the Pan Ramajay Steel Drum Festival!  People come from all over the US for a fun filled week of rehearsing, concerts, and hanging out!
